Bloomington middle school student wins national map contest

Olson Middle School student Abby Ziehl earned first place in the National ArcGIS Online Student Competition. Her entry on Legionnaires’ Disease in Hopkins will be honored at a national geographic information system (GIS) conference in July in San Diego, CA.

Olson Middle School teacher Laurie Bohn and Abby Ziehl
Three additional Oak Grove Middle School Dimensions Academy students placed in the state competition: Elise Alford with a map about Minnesota voting trends and how they've shaped our state; Sebastian Tangelson with a map about Minnesota immigration and its societal impacts; and Oliver Johnson with a map titled Is quality of life worse for Native Americans?

The statewide competition asks middle school students to find an interesting and important story about Minnesota and present it as an ArcGIS story map. Working individually or in teams of two, students research their topic of interest and create their story map using ArcGIS Online, a software system used by businesses, governments and people around the world.
